Challenges and Approaches of impact-oriented Urban and Spatial Research

With the rapid urbanisation in Africa and East and Southeast Asia, the question arises how we can find adequate concepts for sustainability-oriented cities. In this context, urban and spatial research is more and more confronted with questions on how its results contribute to urban transformation and how the effects of transdisciplinary research projects can be measured. Since 2019, the BMBF has been funding ten projects in Southeast Asia and China under the umbrella of the SURE funding priority to provide impetus for the long-term implementation of sustainable urban development strategies. Part of the funding priority is the transdisciplinary Facilitation and Synthesis Research Project, which establishes a methodological approach to highlight the impact of urban research in the context of rapid urbanisation. For this purpose, an impact-oriented monitoring is proposed, which includes a reference framework whose theoretical and methodological conceptions are discussed in this article.

Vor dem Hintergrund der weiterhin rasanten Urbanisierung vor allem in Afrika sowie Ost- und Südostasien stellt sich die Frage nach Konzepten für auf Nachhaltigkeit ausgerichtete Städte. In dem Kontext stehen Stadt- und Raumforschung zunehmend vor der Frage, wie ihre Ergebnisse zur urbanen Transformation beitragen können und wie sich Wirkungen von transdisziplinären Forschungsvorhaben erfassen lassen. Mit dem Ziel, Impulse für eine dauerhafte Implementierung nachhaltiger Stadtentwicklungsstrategien zu setzen, fördert das BMBF seit 2019 mit dem SURE Förderschwerpunkt zehn Projekte in Südostasien und China. Teil des Förderschwerpunkts ist die transdisziplinäre Begleitforschung, die einen methodischen Ansatz etabliert, um die Wirkung von Stadtforschung im Kontext rasanter Urbanisierung herauszustellen. Hierzu wird ein wirkungsorientiertes Monitoring vorgeschlagen, das einen Referenzrahmen umfasst und dessen theoretische sowie methodische Konzeption in diesem Beitrag thematisiert wird.

Anika Slawski, M.A. Urban Design, is a research associate at the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences and is working in teaching and research in the field of urban design and urban planning. She is part of the SURE synthesis research project at TH Lübeck.
Frank Schwartze, Prof. Dipl. Ing. urban planner, holds a Professorship in Urbanism and Planning at the TH Lübeck and is an acting partner of insar consult. His research and teaching is focussing on forms and practices of sustainable urban development. He’s heading the SURE synthesis research project at TH Lübeck.
Kai Michael Dietrich, M. Sc., Urban planner and Urban Designer is research associate at the TH Lübeck, University of Applied Sciences. Here he is working on the BMBF-funding priority Sustainable Development of Urban Regions.
